Explorer (探险者、探测器)of the Extreme Deep

1. Oceans cover more than two-thirds of our planet. Yet, just a small fraction(一部分) of the underwater world has been explored. Now, Scientists at the Woods Hole1 Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in Massachusetts are building an underwater vehicle that will carry explorers as deep as 6,500 meters (21,320 feet). The new machine, known as a manned submersible(潜艇;潜水器) or human-operated vehicle (HOV), will replace another one named Alvin which has an amazing record of discovery, playing a key role in various important and famous undersea expeditions. Alvin has been operating for 40 years but can go down only 4,500 meters (14,784 feet). It’s about time for an upgrade, WHOI researchers say.

2. Alvin was launched in 1964. Since then, Alvin has worked between 200 and 250 days a year, says Daniel Fornari, a marine geologist(地质学家)and director of the Deep Ocean Exploration Institute at WHOI. During its lifetime, Alvin has carried some 12,000 people on a total of more than 3,000 dives(潜水;跳水).

3. A newer, better versions of Alvin is bound to reveal even more surprises about a world that is still full of mysteries, Fornari says. It might also make the job of exploration a little easier. “We take so much for granted on land,” Fornari says. “We can walk around and see with our eyes how big things are. We can see colors, special arrangements.”

4.. Size-wise, the new HOV will be similar to Alvin. It’ll be about 37 feet long. The setting area inside will be a small sphere, about 8 feet wide, like Alvin, it’ll carry a pilot and two passengers. It will be just as maneuverable(机动的,可调动的). In most other ways, it will give passengers more opportunities to enjoy the view, for one thing. Alvin has only three windows, the new vehicle will have five, with more overlap(重叠) so that the passengers and the pilot can see the same thing.

5. Alvin can go up and down at a rate of 30 meters every second, and its maximum speed is 2 knots (about 2.3 miles per hour), while the new vehicle will be able to ascend (上升)and descend at 44 meters per second. It’ll reach speeds of 3 knots, or 3.5 miles per hour.

Oceans(海洋) cover(掩盖) more than(超越) two-thirds(三分之二) of our planet(行星). Yet(相当于but, 表示转折关系,特别关注这种词,有可能是主题句。), just(相当于only, 仅仅) a small(小) fraction(一部分) of the underwater(合成词, under + water, 水下的) world(世界) has been explored(该词和标题中的explorer是同根词,意思是探测、探求。).

2. 接下来,看看所给的题,经过阅读题干我们晓得它们是细节题,而细节题的主要解题次第是文章中止的次第。因而,我们先阅读第一题:

1.What is Alvin?

A) A research(研究) institute(协会、学院).
B) A transporting (运输)vehicle(车辆、工具).
C) A submersible(潜艇).
D A scientist(科学家).

Oceans cover more than two-thirds of our planet. Yet, just a small fraction(一部分) of the underwater world has been explored. Now, Scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in Massachusetts(美国的洲名) are building(修建、建造)an underwater vehicle(一个水下的工具) that(引导的是定语从句,所以后面句子的主语依然是an underwater vehicle)will carry(携带、运送)explorers as deep as(as…as像。。。一样) 6,500 meters (21,320 feet).1>. The new machine(新的机器), known as(被看作是) a manned(是man的合成词,载人的) submersible(潜艇;潜水器) or human-operated(由人来操控的) vehicle (HOV), will replace(动词,相当于take the place of, 意思是替代、替代) another one named(被称做,过去分词做定语) Alvin which(引导定语从句)has an amazing(令人吃惊的) record(记载) of discovery(探求、发现), playing a key role in(在。。。方面起者关键作用) various(各种各样的)
important and famous undersea expeditions(探险、调查). Alvin has been operating(运行) for 40 years but can go down(下沉) only 4,500 meters (14,784 feet). It’s about time for an upgrade(升级), WHOI researchers(研究人员们) say.
剖析并得出结论:经过对该段第二、第三句话意思的了解,能够肯定答案就是C。

3. 接下来,我们一起阅读第2题:

2.Which of the following statements is NOT a fact about Alvin?

(下面有关Alvin的陈说哪一个是不正确的?)
